As a dermatologist, one of the most common yet underestimated skincare steps I discuss with my patients is sunscreen application. In a country like India, where sun exposure is unavoidable, sunscreen is not optional—it is essential.
I often meet patients who believe sunscreen is only needed when they step out in harsh sunlight or visit the beach. The truth is, UV rays are present even on cloudy days and can penetrate through windows. Whether you are indoors, driving, or simply stepping out for a few minutes, your skin is constantly exposed. Over time, this leads to tanning, pigmentation, premature ageing, and in some cases, increases the risk of skin cancer.
Choosing the right sunscreen is important. I usually recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 for daily use. For Indian skin, lightweight, non-greasy, gel-based formulations tend to work best as they are comfortable for our climate.
However, what truly makes a difference is how you apply it. Most people do not use enough sunscreen. For effective protection, you need about a teaspoon for your face and neck. Apply it 15–20 minutes before stepping out, and make it a habit to reapply every 2–3 hours, especially if you are outdoors or sweating.
Another common mistake I see is missing certain areas—the ears, neck, eyelids, and even hands are often neglected. These areas are just as exposed and need equal protection.
In my practice, I always say this—sunscreen is not just about preventing a tan. It is about preserving your skin’s health in the long run. A simple daily habit can make a significant difference over time.
